Angela Kemp, a parishioner and Religious Ed Teacher at OLP, realized that there was a dire need for some kind of activity for the youth in the Tickfaw area, something that would keep them off the streets and out of trouble, Knowing that guitar lessons were not offered in the community schools, not in elementary, middle, or high school, she began to teach the children of her neighborhood in her home. As their friends at school heard about it, they joined in.
One day, Angela came to the church to tell about the problem that had been created. The need was so great, that her group of students had outgrown her home. She asked if it would be possible to move the instructions to St. Dominic Hall. Fr. Hank agreed, and the move was published in the bulletin.
The Basics of Guitar and Reading Music are taught.
Angela volunteers her time to reach out to all youth that are interested.
Classes are Fridays, from 7-8pm.
Instructions are free to the youth of the whole community.
The only requirements are that the children have their own guitar and transportation.
Parents of children who were interested and who could not afford to pay for lessons, gladly signed their children up, and the group grew again.
Youth are instructed individually when needed, so that no child is left behind. Her reward comes as she is able to see each child progress, and observes their enjoyment as they play.
In classes that she previously conducted in St. Rose, Louisiana, the progress of the youth allowed them to preform twice at the House of Blues in New Orleans, at senior citizen's homes, Christmas concerts, and in parks. For this group of bright, enthusiastic youth, the possibilities are the same. Her ministry opens up the new opportunities of creating programs in this community to showcase the students new abilities in front of an audience.
